Eustace Mars Annandale ARON

Eustace Aron was born on 2 November 1885 in Glebe, New South Wales. His parents were Maurice and Minnie Miriam (née Simeon) Aron. He attended Scotch from 1894 to 1897. He later attended Jesus College, Cambridge University, the source of the photograph. 

Eustace was a clerk when he enlisted on 23 November 1914 in England. He served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, 189th Bde. Machine Gun Coy. R.N. Div. with the rank of Sub-Lieutenant.

Eustace died on 13 November 1916 on the Somme, in France. He was 31 years of age.

Service record

Eustace enlisted in the United Kingdom, where his family had moved before 1891. He was initially allotted to the Hawke Battalion of the Royal Naval Division. In May 1915 he embarked for the Middle East and reportedly landed at Cape Helles on the Gallipoli Peninsula. On 17 December he was appointed a Temporary Sub-Lieutenant.

In May 1916 the unit sailed for France, where he was transferred to the Machine Gun Company of the 2nd Brigade that month. On 13 November he was posted missing at the beginning of the Battle of the Ancre, which was fought in the final stages of the Battle of the Somme and culminated in the Royal Naval Division capturing Beaucourt. He was reportedly buried by Reverend E.R. France.

Eustace Aron is buried in the Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel.
