Colin Henry CAMERON

CAMERON

Colin Cameron was born on 28 May 1892 in Hawthorn, Victoria. His parents were Wilson and Charlotte (née Walker) Cameron. He attended Scotch from 1904 to 1907. He was in Cadets.

Colin was a farmer when he enlisted on 12 September 1914 at Kilmore, Victoria. He served in the 8th Light Horse Regiment with the rank of Warrant Officer (Class II), or Squadron Sergeant Major. His Regimental Number was 300.

Colin died on 7 August 1915 at Gallipoli, at Walkers Ridge. He was 23 years of age.

Service record

When war broke out, Colin Cameron was working a farm in partnership with one of his brothers at Kilmore. Colin had earlier served as a Corporal in the Light Horse from 1912-1914. He enlisted in the AIF as a Private, but was promoted to Sergeant the following month. On 16 May 1915, he embarked with his unit, the 8th Light Horse Regiment, for Gallipoli, where he was promoted to Squadron Sergeant Major on 26 July 1915.

He was killed in the fighting at the Nek on 7 August 1915, as depicted in the film Gallipoli and together with G.L. Purves and Lieutenant E.G. Wilson. The latter was in B Squadron with Colin, and must have known him. In the Roll of Honour Circular prepared for the official historian, Colin’s father described him as ‘a young man of great promise, possessed of physical moral and mental strength above the average’ (see below, where he also referred to the fact that Colin was one of four brothers who served).

Colin Cameron has no known grave but is commemorated at Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli..
