Loftus Edward Percival JONES

Loftus Jones was born on 9 August 1876 in Ararat, Victoria. His parents were Peyton and Letitia Caroline (née Casey) Jones. He attended Scotch from 1889 to 1890.

Loftus was a solicitor when he enlisted in 1915 in England. He served in the Yorkshire Regiment with the rank of Captain.

Loftus died on 3 August 1915 at Voormezeele near Ypres, Belgium. He was 38 years of age.

Service record

Loftus Jones passed his law exams at Melbourne University, where he was equal first for the Supreme Court Prize. He was a rower and keen rider. On the outbreak of war Loftus Jones was a barrister at the Supreme Court of Shanghai.

He left his successful law practice to travel to England, leaving on Christmas Day 1914. He enlisted in the British Army and was appointed Captain in the 7th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment on 23 February 1915. He sailed for France on 13 July 1915.

He was killed at St Elooi near Voormezeele in the heavy fighting at Ypres in 1915. ‘Duty, honour, sacrifice’ was inscribed on his headstone, at the direction of his mother, Mrs Letitia Jones. She also arranged for a glass window dedicated to her son to be erected in St George’s Anglican Church at Ypres (Ieper).

Loftus Jones is buried in the Bedford House Cemetery, Belgium.
