Herbert Edward MILLARD

MILLARD

Herbert Millard was born on 30 April 1886 in Balhannah, South Australia. His parents were Edward and Nellie Florence (née McNamara) Millard. He attended Scotch in 1901.

Herbert was a sugar plantation manager and copra trader when he enlisted on in Fiji. He served in the Fiji Contingent, 4th Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Corps (British Army) with the rank of Rifleman. His Regimental Number was R/10171.

Herbert died on 10 May 1915 at Ypres, Belgium. He was 29 years of age.

Service record

Herbert Millard was managing a sugar plantation in Fiji on the outbreak of war. He joined the Fiji Contingent, which was attached to the King’s Royal Rifle Corps of the British army and travelled to England. He was initially reported missing in France but later officially categorised as killed in action. He actually died in Belgium, in the Second Battle of Ypres. This was part of a catastrophic three days for his battalion, the 4th Battalion of the KRRC, which lost 15 officers and 478 other ranks, leaving only 3 officers and 100 men unscathed.

Herbert Millard has no known grave but is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium..
