Frank McCrae MOOREHEAD

MOOREHEAD

Frank Moorehead was born on 3 September 1890 at Hawthorn. His parents were Richard William and Margaret (née McCrae) Moorehead. He attended Scotch from 1904 to 1905. He was in Cadets. He also made a name for himself as good shot in the Rifle Club.

Frank was an orchardist when he enlisted on 19 August 1914 at Broadmeadows, Victoria. He served in the 8th Battalion with the rank of Private. His Regimental Number was 691.

Frank died on 25 April 1915 at Gallipoli. He was 24 years of age.

Service record

He joined the 8th Battalion on 19 August 1914, and embarked from Melbourne on 19 October 1914. His records contain very little information about his service. His remains were found at Gallipoli and reinterred in 1923.

Moorehead was an uncle of the Old Collegian, war correspondent and author Alan Moorehead, for whom visiting Frank’s grave at Shell Green Cemetery was ‘a moment of truth’ in the writing of Alan’s important book on the campaign.

Frank’s brother, 745 Lance Corporal Harold P Moorehead, 22nd Bn, who was not a Scotch Collegian, lost a leg and an arm at Gallipoli.

Frank’s headstone is inscribed with the words: ‘He did his share’.

Frank Moorehead is buried in the Shell Green Cemetery (Artillery Road Plot 19), Gallipoli, Turkey.
