George Francis PAUL

PAUL

George Paul was born on 12 May 1891 in in Kate Street, Sandgate, Queensland. His parents were Dr George William Frederic and Marguerite (née Smith) Paul. He attended Scotch from 1905 to 1908. No obituary or photograph appeared in The Scotch Collegian.

George was an agent when he enlisted on 21 August 1914 at Brisbane. He served in the 1 Light Horse Brigade Train, 5th Company Australian Army Service Corps with the rank of Sergeant. His Regimental Number was 8.

George died on 18 April 1916 in Sohag, Egypt. He was 24 years of age.

Service record

On enlistment George Paul was made a Driver but within two weeks was a Sergeant. He was part of the Army Service Corps, apparently within the 1st Light Horse Brigade Train. He appears to have served on Gallipoli from 5 May 1915. He was admitted to the Highland Mounted Brigade Field Ambulance at Sohag, Egypt, with a diagnosis of diphtheria and scarlet fever on 18 March. On 20 March he was transferred to the Government Hospital at Sohag with diphtheria. His mother was sent a letter telling her the diphtheria was mild. However, he died in this hospital, with a diagnosis of smallpox, on 18 April 1916.

George Paul is buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery (Grave H.36), Egypt.
