Charles Nettleton STRUTT

STRUTT

Charles Strutt was born on 21 September 1884 in Melbourne, Victoria. His parents were Samuel Shippam and Mary Anne (née Nettleton) Strutt. He attended Scotch from 1895 to 1901. The Scotch Collegian of 1915 says that at Scotch he ‘was an identity…for many years.’.

Charles was a wool classer when he enlisted on 17 August 1914 at Melbourne. He served in the 6th Battalion with the rank of Lance Corporal. His Regimental Number was 252.

Charles died on 8 May 1915 at Helles, Gallipoli. He was 30 years of age.

Service record

At 5’6” Charles Strutt was exactly on the height minimum. The Scotch Collegian says ‘he had some difficulty in making the height necessary for enlistment in the early stages of the war, but kept on trying and succeeded in getting away with the First Expeditionary Force in the 6th Battalion.’ He was made Lance Corporal on 17 August 1914, the day of his enlistment. He was killed in the deadly fighting at Cape Helles in May: on the same day and in the same unit as William Riley.

Charles Strutt has no known grave but is commemorated at Helles Memorial, Gallipoli.
